The experience of students into and within university
Action on Access is the national co-ordination team for widening participation in higher education, funded by the Higher Education Funding Council for England. The team work with Universities, Colleges and Partnerships, including Aimhigher, providing advice, information and support to their widening participation activities, strategies and plans.
Our mission
The Action on Access mission is to promote inclusivity and diversity, and the broadest possible access to higher education. We will shape and influence both policy and practice and broker dialogue between policy-makers and practitioners. We will challenge and support the sector, working with a wide range or partners and strategic alliances to help deliver and embed widening participation.

- Action on Access July 2009 Bulletin
- Participation in higher education continues to widen. The 11th set of UK higher education performance indicators shows that three out of the four key indicators of widening participation have improved over the last year.
- We are pleased to announce that the Action on Access Widening Participation Helpdesk, has now been extended to Aimhigher practitioners. The Helpdesk should now be used as the first point of contact for queries on the Aimhigher programme, Summer Schools, the Health Strand and any other aspect of Aimhigher guidance or practice. Pathways to higher education - Apprenticeships
This HEFCE report describes the attributes and progression to higher education of those who have undertaken apprenticeships at further education level.
- 'The University of Leicester, Institute of Lifelong Learning was funded by Foundation Degree Forward to undertake a study of the role of employers and other factors in the successful delivery of foundation degrees. A report and executive summary is publicly available.
Reports from a second related project which examined a problem-solving approach to working with employers from priority sectors in order to develop accredited higher education courses and, where appropriate, involving employer-based learning is also available. - Economy to benefit from £60 million of new higher education capital projects. A further £60 million of capital funding has been approved by HEFCE with some projects able to start as soon as this month.
